The  NEW!  Wellground Farm

Why is it called 'The Wellground ?
It's a long story, but an interesting one.
This area of land was once owned by the Marquis of Bath, part of the Longleat Estate. During WW1, the Marquis allowed the Military to use this land. All the fields below the Westbury White Horse Monument were home to regiments of Soldiers and horses. The horses were trained to pull the gun carriages in the battle across Europe. Each field was home to a different group of Soldiers, many from overseas.
We bought one one of these large fields for Lesley's horses in the Summer of 1984. Whilst leaning over the gate viewing our purchase, wondering what to call it.  We were approached by a very elderly local farmer. As a child in WW1, he remembered the soldiers and horses being there. He also remembered that the soldiers had a name for each field. Our field had a well in the centre, the Soldiers had called this field 'The Wellground'. With such a fantastic history, we had no intention of renaming it. So the Wellground later became Wellground Farm, the home of Wellground Alpacas.
