Wellground Alpaca Stud is situated on the edge of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. The farm is nestled under the Westbury Hills near the ancient Westbury White Horse monument.

Rob and Lesley Rawlins began breeding alpacas back in the 1990's. Their breeding programme involved the finest alpacas they could source for their foundation herd. This paid off with an outstanding herd of top quality alpacas.  Careful selection culminated in successfully breeding a white stud male alpaca, ‘Wellground Farleigh’ who won the ‘Supreme Champion’ Award at Europe’s biggest Alpaca Show, the 2004 Royal Bath and West Show.

Rob and Lesley wanted to farm Alpacas on their smallholding. They needed to live on the land to provide adequate care for the alpacas. Using a sound business plan involving breeding and farming alpacas on the existing 6 acres of grazing land, they successfully obtained planning permission on the smallholding. Permission was given for a Canadian Log Cabin as their farmhouse. The dream of a solid timber log home came true. Between 2001 and 2005 Rob and Lesley Rawlins worked closely with Philip O'Conor of Atlantic Alpacas (UK) Ltd. acting as Agents for the East Sussex based breeders.

In 2006, a business merger resulted in Atlantic Alpacas becoming part of the Australian alpaca business, EP Cambridge Alpaca Stud.

This resulted in Wellground Alpaca Stud forging close links with Australia's most successful alpaca breeders EP Cambridge Alpaca Stud, from the Adelaide Hills region of Australia. Working with EP Cambridge, Rob and Lesley received imports of the very highest quality breeding alpacas from Australia

Why Australia ?  Alpacas have been farmed for about 18 to 20 years longer in Australia, than here in the UK. Using selective breeding procedures, Australian breeders have had longer to improve the alpaca genealogically. Europe has a fledgling alpaca industry. Some excellent alpacas have been bred in the UK; however, improvement can still be gained in the U.K. by importing from countries that have made the biggest gains in genetic improvement. Wellground have imported a selected group of the finest breeding alpacas from EP Cambridge in Australia..

From this import of selected breeding female alpacas, Rob and Lesley Rawlins have completely rebuilt their breeding herd of alpacas. The NEW Wellground Alpaca herd has a nucleus of the finest selected bloodlines from Australia. This will be the foundation of the Wellground breeding future - Our motto 'Wellground - Where only our best will do' has never had more meaning.
